The problem with a gold-toned necklace is rarely the design. It is that the chain turns your neck green by August, because the gold was a thin layer over brass and the brass was always going to win.

These are gold over 316L surgical-grade stainless steel. All fifty-five of them state that material, and all fifty-five carry a waterproof rating — shower, pool, ocean and sweat. It is a necklace you put on and stop thinking about.

Fifty-five styles, from $21 to $39. Pearls, crosses, charms, chains and team motifs.

What "gold" means on this page

These are gold-plated and gold-toned pieces, not solid gold and not gold-filled. That distinction is worth understanding before you buy anything described as gold at this price:

  • Solid gold is gold throughout. Expensive, and heavy in a large pendant.
  • Gold-filled is a thick bonded layer, typically 5% of the item's weight.
  • Gold-plated is a thin layer over a base metal — and everything depends on what that base metal is.

The base metal is the whole argument. Plated over brass, the piece is on a clock: the plating wears, the copper underneath oxidises, the skin goes green. Plated over 316L surgical-grade stainless steel, there is no copper to oxidise and no nickel to react to. All fifty-five here state 316L.

Fifty-five, and what is in them

Pearls — fourteen styles, and the strongest sellers on the page. Dabney Pearl is the best-selling piece on this page. Alongside it: Maris, Delta, Lana, Aster Star, Birdie Moon, Corrie Clover, Kai Seashell and Willa Heart. All synthetic, which is what keeps a pearl piece light enough to wear all day.

Faith — Carly Cross in gold and pearl gold, Catherine Cross, Shepherd Cross, and a plain Cross Charm. More at cross and faith necklaces.

Bows — seven Sadie Bow colourways, the same shape as the bow flat back studs.

Sport and team — baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, golf, snow ski and a State of Texas. Also in game day necklaces.

Chains and everyday — Palmer Paperclip, Brooke, Abigail, Miles, Peanut, Benny and Madison, for layering rather than for a motif.

Coastal — Marina Shell, Kai Seashell, Anchor Charm and Paloma Pear Drop, gathered with the rest at coastal necklaces.

The specs, plainly
  • Material: 316L surgical-grade stainless steel, stated on all fifty-five.
  • Waterproof: all fifty-five are rated for shower, pool, ocean and sweat.
  • Price: fifty-one are $39; four of the beaded pearl styles are $21.
  • Children's standard: thirty-four of the fifty-five are made to ASTM F2923-20, the US children's jewelry standard. The remaining twenty-one are not tested to it.

Chain length and clasp type are listed per style on the product page rather than claimed here, because they vary across the fifty-five.

Getting the colour to last

Plating is a surface. It survives water and sweat, but it wears with friction and dissolves slowly in the wrong chemicals.

  • Put a necklace on after perfume, hairspray and sunscreen, not before.
  • Rinse with fresh water after chlorine or saltwater, and dry it.
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth. An abrasive polishing cloth takes plating off.
  • Skip jewelry cleaner and ultrasonic baths entirely.
Also worth seeing

The cooler-toned half of the same range is at silver necklaces, and the full necklace collection — every finish, every motif — is waterproof necklaces. Twenty-four of these fifty-five are half of a matching set with an earring in the same design.

Buying for a child? Twenty-eight of these are in kids' necklaces, all of them made to ASTM F2923-20. And everything in the shop built to be left on — earrings and necklaces both — is gathered in hypoallergenic waterproof jewelry.

Questions

Will these turn my neck green?

Green marks come from copper in brass oxidising against skin once the plating wears through. All fifty-five of these state 316L surgical-grade stainless steel as their material, which contains no copper to oxidise. As the finish ages it fades rather than reacting.

Is this solid gold?

No — gold-plated and gold-toned over stainless steel. Not solid gold and not gold-filled, which is why a pendant costs $39 rather than several hundred, and why it weighs almost nothing around your neck.

Can I shower and swim in it?

Yes. All fifty-five carry a waterproof rating for shower, chlorine pool, ocean and sweat. Rinse with fresh water afterwards and dry it — residue sitting on the chain, rather than the water itself, is what shortens the life of a plated finish.

Can I sleep in it?

The material handles it. Whether a chain is comfortable to sleep in is personal, and a longer pendant is more likely to catch than a short one. If you want jewelry you genuinely never take off, the screw back flat back studs are the pieces built for it.

Are these safe for sensitive skin?

Nickel is the usual cause of a reaction, and 316L surgical-grade stainless steel is designed without it. Every style here states that material. Thirty-four are additionally made to ASTM F2923-20, which sets a limit on nickel release.

How long does the gold finish last?

That depends on friction and chemicals far more than on time. Kept away from perfume, sunscreen and abrasive cloths, it holds its colour for years. Because the base is steel rather than brass, wear shows up as fading rather than as a mark on your skin.
