Gold Huggie Earrings

Gold huggies are the earring you buy once and then wear for a year. That only works if the gold stays gold — which is where most of them fail, because plating over brass goes patchy the first time it meets a shower.

These are gold over 316L surgical-grade stainless steel, and every one of the forty-four is rated waterproof: shower, pool, ocean, sweat. Every one closes with a hinged clicker, so there is no back to lose.

Scarlett in 8, 10, 12 and 14mm from $32. Sunday and Nylah in 8, 10 and 12, Nola in 8 and 10. Charm huggies from $36.

The plain hoops

Scarlett is the one people come back for — 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 14mm, plain or set with CZ, and between the gold sizes it did 523 pairs last year, more than any other huggie in the shop. Sunday Hoop is the rounder profile in the same three sizes; Nylah is the slimmer one at $32; Madeline, Colette, Gwen and Hunter fill in between.

If you are buying a first pair, 10mm is the size that suits most ears. 8mm is for a second or third hole. 12 and 14mm start to read as a hoop rather than a huggie.

The charm huggies

Half the page is a gold hoop with something hanging from it, from $36. Willa Heart, Dakota Heart, Sadie Bow, Esther Cross in clear and multi, Lock and Key, Faye Butterfly, Jo, Celine, Amara, Palmer Paperclip, Marigold, Nola, a Baseball, and the Edith drops in clear, blue, pink, lavender and red. Kai Seashell and Aster Star hang mother-of-pearl.

Several charms lift off, so one pair of gold huggies does two jobs.

Gold that stays gold

The base metal is what matters. All forty-four are 316L surgical-grade stainless steel with a gold-plated finish, and all forty-four are rated waterproof — shower, pool, ocean and sweat. Every one is made to ASTM F2923-20, the US children's jewelry standard, which is why so many of them are also sold as kids' styles.

Plated brass reacts to sweat and chlorine. Steel does not, which is the entire reason these can be worn continuously rather than taken off before the pool.

Questions

Is this solid gold?

No — it is a gold finish over 316L surgical-grade stainless steel, which is what makes it waterproof and hypoallergenic at $32 to $39. Nothing in the shop is solid gold. The steel underneath is the reason the finish survives a shower rather than the reason to be disappointed.

Will the gold wear off?

Not the way plating over brass does. The base is stainless steel, which does not corrode or react with sweat, and all forty-four carry a waterproof rating for shower, pool, ocean and sweat. These are made to be worn continuously.

What size gold huggie should I get?

10mm suits most first piercings. 8mm is the discreet one for a second or third hole. 12mm and 14mm read as a small hoop rather than a huggie. Scarlett is the line that runs across all four sizes.

How do they fasten?

A hinged clicker — the hoop opens at one side and snaps shut behind the lobe. There is no butterfly back and no screw, so there is nothing to lose in a gym bag or down a sink.

Can children wear them?

Many of these are sold as children's styles and all forty-four are made to ASTM F2923-20, the US standard for children's jewelry, which limits nickel release and lead and cadmium content. Kids huggie earrings is the filtered version of this page.
