For a healed piercing, with the right earring: yes. That is what a steel screw back flat back is designed for — in before school in September, still in at Christmas.
But "every day" hides four different questions, and parents ask them one at a time. Here they are in the order they come up.
The one that decides whether the earrings actually stay in, because a child who wakes with a sore ear will start asking to take them out.
Two things make it work, and neither is the metal.
The disc. A butterfly back stands proud of the lobe. Eight hours of head weight presses it into the skin behind the ear — hence the sore, dented lobe in the morning. A flat disc sits flush and there is nothing to press.
The thread. A butterfly back is held on by friction, and a pillowcase provides friction all night. A screw fitting does not care. This is why earrings disappear into bedding, and why screw backs mostly do not.
There is one exception: a healing piercing is a different situation. The jewelry stays in, but sleeping on that side is worth avoiding — overnight pressure is one of the most common reasons a new lobe stays grumpy for weeks.
Two separate answers depending on whether the piercing is healed.
Healed: yes, if the earring carries a water rating. On these product pages that rating is a sentence rather than a word — safe for shower, pool, ocean and sweat — so there is nothing to interpret. All 35 kids' necklaces and all 23 kids' huggies carry it, as do the kids' flat back studs.
The screw back is doing a second job here. A push back in a swimming pool is an earring at the bottom of a swimming pool.
Still healing: no. Pools, lakes and hot tubs are worth avoiding in the early weeks regardless of the earring, because a water rating describes what the metal survives, not what an open channel should meet. Showers and baths are fine throughout.
Hot tubs stay off the list either way — concentrated chlorine plus heat is the harshest thing jewelry meets.
One habit worth teaching early: rinse with fresh water afterwards. Chlorine residue and drying salt keep working for hours after the swim, and ten seconds under a tap ends it.
This is where policy matters more than materials.
Many clubs and leagues require earrings to be removed or taped for contact sports, and some are strict about it. For a healed piercing, taking them out for a match is straightforward. For a new one, taping is usually the better answer, because removing jewelry from a young piercing is exactly what you are trying to avoid.
Ask the coach before the season rather than at the side of a pitch. It is a two-minute conversation in August and an argument in October.
Where earrings are allowed, a flat back is the sensible format: nothing protrudes to catch on a helmet strap, a swimming cap, a gum shield case or another player.
Most school policies ask for small studs only, which a flat back already satisfies — and a flat disc is usually more acceptable than a butterfly clutch, since there is less to catch.
Worth checking the actual wording before the piercing, particularly around PE. Some schools require removal for PE, which for a young piercing is a problem worth knowing about in advance rather than discovering in week two.
Not the water. The earring going missing.
A lost earring on a young piercing is not a $32 problem, it is a closing-channel problem — empty for a day, and the replacement may not go back in.
So: a weekly check by feel, thumb and finger, a light turn to confirm the back is still snug. It takes seconds, it catches the one that has worked a quarter-turn loose, and it is the single most useful habit of the whole first year.
Kids' hypoallergenic flat back studs are the everyday range — 316L post, flat disc, screw fitting, made to ASTM F2923-20. Kids' huggies are the step up when she wants something beyond a stud, and kids' necklaces are the matching pieces.
For the mechanics of why the back decides all of this, screw backs vs push backs for children. For the adult version of the same question, can you sleep, shower and swim in flat back earrings.
In a flat back screw back, yes — there is nothing protruding to press into the lobe and the back does not work loose on a pillow. While a piercing is still healing, avoid sleeping on that side.
Once healed, yes, if the piece carries a water rating. While healing, keep her out of pools and lakes whatever the earring is rated for.
Most policies allow small studs, and a flat back qualifies. PE is the clause worth reading, since some schools require removal and that is awkward for a new piercing.
Many require removal or taping for contact sports. Ask before the season. Taping is usually the right answer for a young piercing.
Once a week by feel. A light turn to confirm the back is still snug, with clean hands. That is the habit that prevents the lost-earring problem.
That is a family decision rather than a materials one. What the materials can tell you is that a steel screw back made to the children's standard is the format designed for continuous wear — whether a particular child is ready is a different question.
Parents choose a child's earrings by the front. The back is the part that decides whether they stay in, whether she can sleep in them, and whether the piercing survives a lost earring.
A parent's version of the aftercare instructions: what the routine actually is, the four mistakes that cause most problems, how to handle school and sport, and what is normal versus what needs a professional.
Most of the reassuring words on children's jewelry mean nothing. This one is a real specification with real tests behind it — here is what it covers, what it does not, and why it is the thing to look for.
Waterproof jewelry does not need maintenance to stay safe. It needs a little to stay looking new — because the steel and the finish on top of it age at completely different rates.
Watches have a rating system. Jewelry does not — which means "waterproof" on a jewelry page is whatever the brand decided it means. Here is how to work out what you are actually being told.
Three kinds of water, three different attacks. Chlorine, salt and sweat each damage jewelry in their own way — and the metal that shrugs off one is not always the metal that shrugs off another.
Solid gold, gold-filled, vermeil and gold-plated are four different things with four different lifespans, and in the US they are legally defined terms. Here is what each one means and what it buys you.
The honest answer is: for the first several weeks, whatever your piercer put in. Here is why changing early is the mistake people regret, how to know when a lobe is ready, and what to change into when it is.
"Surgical steel" has no fixed definition — several very different grades are sold under it, including some chosen for hardness rather than for sitting in a piercing. Here is what the grades mean and which number to look for.
If earrings make your lobes red and itchy a day later, it is almost certainly nickel. Here is how to tell it apart from ordinary piercing irritation, and how to decode the eight phrases a product page might use for metal.
Green skin is copper — not nickel, and not an allergy. Here is which metals do it, why plating only delays it, and why "what is it plated over" is a better question than "is it gold."
Hypoallergenic is not a regulated word — no US agency defines it for jewelry and nobody has to prove anything before printing it on a box. Here is what it actually points at, why the answer almost always comes down to nickel, and the four things to check on any product page.
A flat back stud is an earring with a smooth disc behind the lobe instead of a butterfly clutch. Here is the anatomy, the actual measurements, and why the back is what makes it an earring you can leave in.
